Painting Chicago Peace & Seduction Rose

Painting is a form of artistic expression that has captivated people for centuries. It allows us to convey emotions, capture moments, and create beauty on canvas. One of the most popular subjects in painting is flowers, and two of the most beautiful roses to paint are the Chicago Peace and Seduction roses.

In this video, I am painting these roses using Maimari Puro artist oil paint on canvas, and explore the importance of capturing the effect of light on the flowers.
As I start to paint the Chicago Peace and Seduction roses, I hear great art masters telling me (in my head) that the flowers must appear as though I can plunge my hand into the bunch. This means that the flowers must be painted in such a way that they look realistic, they have depth and appear almost three-dimensional as if they could be plucked right out of the canvas. Achieving this effect requires a great deal of attention to painting in the correct tonal values. For that, I draw on my tonal impressionist training from my younger artist days.

One of the most important aspects of painting flowers is capturing the effect of light on the petals. Flowers are highly reflective, and the way they reflect light can have a significant impact on how they appear. To achieve this effect, I am striving to paint the flowers in an alla prima impressionist style. This means that I am painting wet-on-wet, without waiting for layers to dry, and I am focusing on the overall impression of the subject rather than drawing and filling in edges.
The Maimari Puro artist oil paint is an excellent choice for this type of painting because it has a smooth texture and vibrant colors. The oil paint allows me to blend colors seamlessly, creating subtle gradations of light and shadow that add depth and dimension to the flowers.

As I continue to paint, I am constantly adjusting my brush strokes and color choices to capture the unique qualities of each rose. The Chicago Peace rose has delicate pink petals that fade to creamy yellow at the edges, while the Seduction rose is cream with subtle hues of red with a hint of purple undertones. I am careful not to paint each petal individually, while paying attention to the subtle variations in color and texture that make each flower unique.
